Weather

Nobody likes when it rains on their parade, and we’re no different. Unfortunately we are unable to jump in adverse weather conditions. This includes cloud cover, high winds, precipitation, or low temperatures. Often times, even if there is bad weather in Chicago, we may have clear blue skies for jumping in Ottawa. Even though the meteorologist is often wrong, if you are concerned about the weather, we recommend checking your favorite weather source for the weather in Ottawa, Illinois 61350, or call us at 815-433-0000 with any questions.

Your $50 deposit is non-refundable in the case of weather. We offer our tandem class rain or shine and in the event of weather you have two options:

a) You may come out and attend the 25 minute tandem class. In the case you are not able to make your jump we will issue a rain check, which is redeemable at full value for up to one year from your original reservation date. If you return to make your jump within the same calendar year you will not need to complete paperwork or take the class again, otherwise a $10 class fee will apply.

b) You may reschedule your reservation for up to one year from your original reservation date without incurring penalties. We realize that we are a long drive for most of our customers, so in the case of weather, you may call us the day of your reservation at 815-433-0000 to reschedule for a future date. We will hold your $50 deposit for one year.

Yes. Skydive Chicago® has a special offer for your second tandem. If you pay for it within 1 week of your first jump, it’ll only cost you $149.00. You can use it that the same day, or save it and use it for up to one year later.

Definitely YES! We have so much to do here at Skydive Chicago®. Bring everyone! We have swimming, hiking or biking the trails, volleyball, a disc golf course, and so much more! You can even plan on camping overnight at Skydive Chicago®, but keep in mind that for every person jumping, you are allowed a maximum of 1 non-jumping overnight guest.

The class is about 25 minutes. Prior to the jump your Instructor will walk you through the training again.

We can generally accommodate 3-5 tandems in the airplane at one time. For safety purposes you will not be jumping out of the airplane at the same time as we need to maintain a safe distance between jumpers in the sky. For larger groups you will always get to jump with someone from your group, but you may be asked to form smaller sub-groups of 3-5 people when you check in.

At Skydive Chicago®, your first and second jump must be tandem, in which you’re harnessed to the front of an instructor. In case you forget something, like pulling the parachute, it is good to have someone there.

Although it is unlikely that your main parachute will fail to open properly, it does sometimes occur. At Skydive Chicago, all equipment is equipped with a main and a reserve parachute, as well as an Automated Activation Device (AAD), which is designed to open the reserve parachute should the jumper be unable to.

At Skydive Chicago®, you need to make two tandem jumps and acquire Instructor approval. Then, you can transition into our Advanced Freefall Program (AFP) for students.

Most landings are quite soft, with most people doing a soft sliding sit-down landing. Under certain conditions, some people make a stand-up landing.

Tandem skydivers fall at approximately 120 miles per hour.

A tandem skydive lasts up to 60 seconds in freefall and about 5-7 minutes under canopy.

The sensation of freefall is more like flying than falling, and is intensely exciting and liberating. The canopy flight is peaceful and relaxing.

Sometimes after the skydive your ears may feel plugged up or you might have some discomfort.  This is caused by the the change in pressure, similar to what you may experience while flying on a commercial aircraft or going up a mountain.  To help to avoid this, try to keep your ears equalized on the flight to altitude.  Yawning or moving your jaw around helps this process.  Most skydivers do not experience this problem, and if they do it goes away 10-15 minutes after they land. Here is a link to a video with more information.

Skydiving is like any other extreme sport: there are inherent risks that require careful training and execution. Failure to follow that training can lead to serious injury or death.

Yes. Skydive Chicago® operates a freefall cinematography business right here on site. We can provide you with videos that have been edited to music and include a pre-jump interview. We also provide high definition digital stills of your skydive.

Your videographer can get footage of your whole group together while on the ground, but once in freefall the time/distance gap between jumper exits prevents a camera person from being able to film more than one student at a time.

You will be much too busy with your skydive to look after your camera. It very easily may get lost or broken and we cannot risk dropping it in freefall or under parachute.

In most cases weather does not affect the outcome of your video and pictures, however there are a few circumstances that it can.  Cold:  It is roughly 20-30 degrees cooler at 13,000ft  from the surface temperatures.  If the ground temperatures are below 40°F you will need to wear a winter hat and neckwarmer that may cover your face.  If getting the best shot of you skydiving is a high priority you may want to consider scheduling when temperatures are warmer.   High Overcast:  We can not jump through clouds, but on occasion the overcast cloud layer is above our lowest tandem jump altitude (8,000′)  The overcast layer may cause your photo and video to be a bit darker than if it were a sunny day.  If you have any questions feel free to call or email.

Your instructor(s) works very hard to introduce to you the world of skydiving.  They have spent tens of thousands of dollars in training and equipment to get to the point to take people on tandem skydives.  They are compensated for their jumps,  but if you feel as though your instructor was especially good, tipping is always appreciated but never expected.

As with most sport, the better shape you are in the easier it will be. We have taken people with many different disabilities. If you have a special requirement, call us to see if we can make your dream of flight come true!

If you have a special medical concern, please contact your doctor.

For weekend reservations please schedule yourself to spend the entire day with us. For weekday jumping, please schedule yourself to spend half a day. Weather and other variables may affect these expected wait times. Scheduling an earlier arrival time may decrease your wait.

Yes. For safety purposes jumpers must weigh less than 250lbs. No exceptions can be made and weight will be verified.  Under some circumstances it may be unsafe to take a passenger even if they are under the weight limit if the harness doesn’t fit correctly. Our Instructors make the final determination to keep everyone safe.

There is no maximum age, but you must be at least 18 years of age regardless of parental consent. A valid photo ID (drivers license, state ID, or passport) is required to sign up for class. If you do not have an ID you will not jump.
